PS4 Pro Boost Mode Will Speed Up Older Games

Sony has been sharing details about some of the new features that the upcoming firmware version 4.50 will bring to the PlayStation 4. It’s rolling out the beta version of the firmware to testers who will put the update through its paces before Sony decides to release it to the public. One of the new features included in firmware version 4.50 is Boost Mode for the PlayStation 4 Pro.

Simply put, the PS4 Pro Boost Mode is going to speed up older games on the console. It will enable those games to run faster and smoother on the most powerful PlayStation that Sony has ever released.

Since PlayStation 4 Pro is compatible with all PS4 games, older titles will already perform better on it even if they have not been optimized by the developer for PS4 Pro. However, Sony has confirmed that the Boost Mode option will be exclusive to the more powerful console.

It says that Boost Mode enables the PS4 Pro to run at a higher GPU and CPU clock speed to improve the gameplay for some games that were released before the launch of the PS4 Pro. “Games that have a variable frame rate may benefit from a higher frame rate, and load times may be shorter in some games too,” said a spokesperson for the company.

Sony is yet to provide more specifics about the feature, like would there be any drawbacks to running the console at full speed all the time and whether that’s going to cause any overheating issues. The company will hopefully clear this up before version 4.50 is released in the coming months.
